When you are designing a premium kitchen, the way an appliance meets the cabinetry around it is as much an architectural decision as an aesthetic one. For homeowners working with a designer, architect or cabinetmaker, understanding your installation options from the outset is essential. We are often asked exactly what flush inset means and which appliances can achieve it, so we have set out the detail below.

What does flush inset installation mean?

In a flush inset installation, the front of the appliance sits flush with the surrounding cabinetry, on the same plane as the cabinet doors and drawers beside it. There is no protruding appliance face and no break in the run of cabinetry. The result is a flat, continuous facade where the refrigeration reads as joinery rather than as a separate machine. On our Professional models the term is measured from the face frame rather than the door, so the door itself continues to sit proud; for a fully flush door face, an overlay model is the one to specify.

What is the difference between flush inset and standard installation?

Both are built-in installations. The difference is where the front of the appliance finishes relative to your cabinetry. In a standard installation, the appliance sits proud, forward of the surrounding cabinetry, presenting a defined face of its own. In a flush inset installation, an overlay door is recessed so its face sits level with the cabinet fronts around it. Standard is simpler to install and offers generous ventilation; flush inset delivers the seamless, panelled look, and asks for more precise planning.

Which appliances can be installed flush inset?

A fully flush door face is possible only on appliances specified to accept a custom overlay panel. When a unit is ordered panel-ready, it takes a panel finished in the same material as your cabinetry, so the door can be made to match the kitchen precisely. This is not limited to one part of the range: many models across our refrigeration can be specified panel-ready for a flush result, while others wear our signature stainless steel and are designed to be seen. Because eligibility is set per model rather than by range name, the practical first step is to confirm that your chosen appliance is available in a panel-ready, flush inset specification before the cabinetry is designed.

How should I plan for a flush inset kitchen?

Flush inset is a design decision, not a finishing touch. Because the appliance is recessed into the cabinetry to a precise depth, the surrounding joinery has to be planned around it from the first drawing. The depth of the enclosure, the clearance the doors need to open, and the thickness of the custom panel all have to be coordinated before the cabinetry is built. Specified early, it is straightforward. Attempted after the kitchen is fitted, it is rarely possible without rebuilding the run.

Exact opening dimensions, panel thickness and clearance vary by model and are set out in the specification for each unit. Your dealer or design consultant will confirm the precise requirements for your chosen appliance and cabinetry, so every figure is right before anything is built.

When is flush inset the right choice?

  • You are designing a new or fully refitted kitchen and want the appliances to integrate completely into the cabinetry.

  • A seamless, panelled aesthetic matters more to you than a visible, defined appliance face.

If your cabinetry is already in place, or you prefer the appliance to present a finished face of its own, a standard installation may suit the project better. Neither is more correct. The right choice follows the kitchen you are designing.
