The right extractor depends on where you cook. A downdraft extractor rises from the worktop directly behind the hob and is the natural choice for an island or a peninsula, where an overhead hood would interrupt the sightlines. A wall-mounted hood sits above the hob against a wall and moves a larger volume of air across a wider span, which suits a range cooker or a busy gas cooktop set against a wall. We make both, engineered to the same standard, so the decision comes down to the architecture of your kitchen rather than a compromise in performance.

How does a downdraft extractor work?
A downdraft extractor captures heat, steam and cooking aromas at the level they are produced, at the surface of the hob, rather than waiting for them to rise. The unit sits flush in the worktop directly behind the cooking zone. When you need it, it rises above the surface; when you are finished, it lowers back into the worktop and out of sight.
Because it draws air sideways and down rather than relying on a plume reaching a hood overhead, a downdraft works with the cook rather than around them. There is no canopy at head height, nothing to duck beneath at an island, and nothing interrupting the eyeline across an open-plan room. Our downdraft is finished in stainless steel and operated by remote control, so the cooking zone stays uncluttered.
Can you use a downdraft with a gas hob?
Yes. Our downdraft extractor is designed to pair with Wolf cooktops, and it suits gas, induction and the sealed burner rangetops equally. It is most often specified alongside an induction or gas cooktop set into an island, where a wall hood is not an option. As with any extraction, the more powerful the heat source beneath it, the more the ventilation has to do, which is one reason we recommend matching the extractor to the cooktop at the design stage rather than afterwards.
How does a wall-mounted hood work?
A wall hood works with the physics of a kitchen rather than against it. Heat, steam and smoke rise, and a canopy mounted above the hob collects that rising plume across its full width before drawing it away. Because the canopy can be wider and deeper than the cooking surface, it casts a generous capture area over everything on the hob, which is exactly what a wide range cooker or a multi-burner gas cooktop needs when several pans are working at once.
Our wall hoods are built to be seen. The Designer Pro range spans five widths, from 762mm up to 1524mm, all 450mm high and 610mm deep, so the canopy can be scaled to the cooking span beneath it. Finished in stainless steel, a wall hood reads as a deliberate design feature above the hob rather than something to hide.
Which is more powerful?
Neither format is inherently better. They are matched to different situations. A wall hood works with the natural rise of hot air and has a large capture area, which is an advantage above a wide range cooker against a wall. A downdraft has to capture steam before it rises, so it is engineered to pull strongly at close range, and it earns its place wherever an overhead canopy simply cannot go. The more useful question is not which is stronger in the abstract, but which is stronger for your layout. For a wall-sited range, the hood. For an island, the downdraft, because a hood that is not there extracts nothing.

Which extractor suits your kitchen layout?
The format follows the floor plan. Use this as a starting point, then refine it with a specialist against your specific cooktop and ducting route.
If you are cooking on an island or peninsula
Choose a downdraft. An overhead hood above an island becomes a visual full stop in the middle of the room, and at a peninsula it can sit awkwardly close to head height. A downdraft keeps the island clean and the sightlines open, rising only when you cook and disappearing when you do not. This is the single clearest case for downdraft extraction.
If your hob or range is against a wall
Choose a wall hood. With a wall behind the cooking zone you have the ideal mounting point for a canopy, and you gain the wider capture area that a range cooker benefits from. Here the hood is not a compromise, it is a design feature, and it lets the extractor do the most work with the least effort.
If you are fitting a wide range cooker
Favour a wall hood scaled to the appliance. A range cooker presents a wide, busy cooking surface, and a canopy sized to match it, up to 1524mm in our range, collects the combined output of every burner. A wall hood gives a wide range the capture area it needs above the hob.
The honest trade-offs
Every ventilation choice involves a compromise somewhere, and it is better to know it before the worktop is cut, rather than after.
A downdraft asks for space beneath the worktop. The mechanism and ducting need room in the cabinetry below, so it is worth planning the run early, particularly around an island where ducting has to travel through the floor.
A wall hood is a visual commitment. It is meant to be seen, which is a strength against a wall and a drawback in the middle of a room. If you want the cooking zone to disappear, the downdraft is the honest answer.
Match the extractor to the heat beneath it. A powerful multi-burner cooktop generates more to capture than a compact hob. The right pairing is a design-stage decision, not an afterthought, and it is exactly the kind of thing our specialists size for you.
